Conclusion
Information systems play a vital role in the operations of the company. They allow for data to be collected, stored, and distributed. After conducting a careful study, we were able to analyze Kean University’s information systems implemented within the Admissions department. The institution obtains a cost, focused competitive strategy from its competitors. Kean is known as having the lowest tuition for a four-year institution in New Jersey. There are two main processes that allow the university to hold this competitive advantage. These processes include a structured process of admissions and a dynamic process of marketing. The process in which the students are admitted is relatively complex. However, the admissions office has over 30 student ambassadors to assist students with this process. The main way this is completed is by utilizing an information system called Slate.
Slate is an inter-enterprise data management system that allows employees to view a wide range of data regarding a student and their application. It stores information regarding prospective students who inquired, students who have applied, and current students. It also enables the department to view any documents students are missing for their applications as well as see their application status. It has transformed the way students are admitted and assisted. In order to attract these students who apply, Kean engages in a marketing strategy within social media. A popular SMIS that the institution implements in Instagram. This platform greatly supports Kean’s marketing process. Through Instagram, the Admissions office is able to promote, connect, and inform prospective students in aims of persuading them to apply. With the wide knowledge gained from this analysis, we have learned the true significance information systems have on a company and how important it is to conduct frequent analysis on them. This allows for any issues to be discovered and resolved. With that being said, we have discovered problems within the systems that Kean implements and have made recommendations to resolve these issues.
